Me and a friend went over to Laurel Canyon to go clubbing. We were young and bored. We came to Sunset Boulevard. On one side was this whole battalion of cops. In full Macedonian battle array. I had been working on this song about guys in Vietnam. We considered turning around. And the cops just went nuts. I definitely wanted another musician. And first, we wanted John Sebastian.
But he had his own plan. I was thinking a keyboard player. But Ahmet brought it up, getting Neil. But it was odd, because he [Neil] had already walked out on me once, in Buffalo Springfield…at a pretty critical time. It turned out to be a pretty good match. There was always a bond between us from the very beginning. But that turned into solo careers. Life gives you the curves it does. Not me. Everything else seemed like a crushing bore. Sportswriter, maybe. Only members can comment.
When I am ready I will put them down but I have to make sure the lyric police shows up. I was just reading some of the press from back then and it was a lot of bollocks. We had all come to think quite a lot of ourselves. The bless of fame was wearing off. We talked everything to death and that would take hours. It was the adjustment to working with Neil. For myself, I was already in the process of moving and had one foot in Europe. I was ready to make an escape to find new mates to pal around with, to discover England — freshly mowed grass and lager and guineas and all the usual stuff.
That was great and a tremendous load off my mind. How did Neil change the dynamic? Why do you want to put these out there even though they sound great? Yeah, if you say so. Some of it is good. It was odd. I had a knee replacement last year so I was flat on my back while these were being collected and a bit distracted.
They sent me MP3 files that sounded like rancid shit, the worst car radio on an AM setting. So I have mixed feelings. Neil seems to release everything. He releases everything in huge batches. I always thought it was excessive but he seems to do it very well. You were all writing so many songs in this era. I know. It was a ridiculous amount. The secret was to get the best ones and then stop. Did you ever discuss making it a double album? I think everybody had one foot in their solo project.
I was planning mine and it turned out great because I could quickly differentiate between what was CSNY and what was solo. How do you differentiate between solo and CSNY? Simple as that.
It was e-harmony. Do any of the songs bring back particular memories? But the band was entering a dark period. Stills had just broken up with Judy Collins. Nash's relationship with Joni Mitchell was growing rocky.
And Crosby's girlfriend, Christine Hinton, had been killed in a car crash. And Neil Young [the only band member who didn't talk to us for this story] also went his own way in the studio.
Crosby said, "Neil, when he joins the band doesn't really join the band. He made his tracks outside by himself and brought them.
This interview with Stephen Stills by Jim Girard appeared in the issue that came out on March 7, It featured the headline, "Stephen Stills — This band is better than Manassas," a reference to the band Stills had formed with Chris Hillman of the Byrds. Would Stills like to do an interview when he got to Cleveland? Well, a somewhat disabled and fevered Stephen Stills got into town on Monday to prepare for a Tuesday concert. And after the concert, Stills went into relative seclusion with his French singer-wife Veronique — who, by the way, was eight months pregnant.
And it wasn't until about three thousand and twenty-two phone conversations with his road manager, that a Friday morning breakfast interview was arranged. By then it seemed that his broken ankle, acquired from slipping on ice at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, was healing. Likewise, his degree fever had subsided.
Stills, of course, hadn't planned on spending five days in Cleveland, Ohio. Yet, the legendary musicians' musician had managed to do some serious drinking the night before, as evidenced by his eyes that morning. But eggs, toast and gallons of juice, milk and coffee began to focus his eyes on things and stop his babbling about the previous evening's party.
After a short discourse about impeaching president Nixon something Stills has been encouraging for years, if you'll recall , he began the interview. It was supposed to be finished before this tour, but it didn't happen. You can't just say 'I'm going to have this finished by next Friday.
And since tours have to be planned months in advance, you have to drop everything and go out and play for a few months Just which ones are they? Are they duets or is it stuff like on her Elektra album that was released here? I just gave her my new band and told her to do some things. She cut a couple of sides and I helped with the production. She'll be on her own again, but right now she's concentrating on being a mommy.
The baby should be due around mid-April. You've got Barnstorm's Kenny Passarelli on bass. I know you've used him before, but it's beginning to look like a permanent thing. So, Kenny quit. He's in the band for good now. SCENE: You mean Walsh just went out and broke up his band — just when they were getting really respected and successful? Joe went to Hollywood and some cats told him he needed a new band.
So, he's getting one now. I think his band was too big anyway; Joe really only needs a bass, drums, and keyboards player behind him
