Daily Critter Facts. Like other crabs, these crabs breathe via specialized gills. King crabs are closely related to hermit crabs. What a size difference though. Porcupine crabs are carnivorous. They prefer to hunt live prey but will settle for the remains of other sea creatures when necessary.

Common food sources include other crabs, sea stars and small fish. They hunt using their large claws -- their right ones, which are always larger than their left claws -- and then their mouths to rip their prey apart.

Although the spines protect them from many predators, a few natural predators like humans and octopus are concerns. Spiny king crabs are almost always red or pink, though some blue king crab species exist.

Adult spiny king crab bodies average about 7 inches in length, each leg measures about 23 inches. Males are typically slightly larger than females. Both sexes have gills that give the crabs the ability to breathe under water via gas exchange facilitated by the under-body set of small legs. Spiny king crabs live long lives -- some have reached 30 years of age. We do recommend keeping the water levels low, though.

Freshwater Pom Pom Crabs are notorious escape artists. Sick or otherwise unwell crustaceans molt abnormally and may not molt at all, and if a crustacean can not molt when it needs to, it will die. When an illness or stressful situation limits the crustacean from molting, it will literally explode in its shell. Pom pom crabs are fully aquatic and easy to care for. They do not have any special housing requirements besides the fact that they are burrowers.

They will enjoy a planted tank or any tank with lots of hiding spots. Unlike many species of freshwater crabs, Pom pom crabs are very active and not shy creatures. The burrowing activity of Chinese mitten crab can undermine levees and significantly increase the occurrence of stream bank erosion. The mitten crab can even be a threat to human health — as they are an intermediate host of the Oriental lung fluke.

Humans become infested if raw or undercooked crabs are eaten.
