I will admit it; I cried. Sue covers for Becky and is fired. Glee has never been a show to shy from heavy topics, covering everything from bulimia to suicide with varying levels of tact and success. As the glee club heals by — what else? So obvious. By cutting between these two scenes, the episode signifies that being tricked into a 3-week romance is equally traumatizing to thinking you could die any moment.
And it's called what? But we didn't want to prejudge Glee. We wanted to see what was the justification for including such contentious subject matter, even if it meant we approached the episode with dread. Sadly, we believe that all the ill feeling coming from both Glee fans and non-fans in the US is entirely justified.
This is Glee at its lowest. In retrospect, all the vapid stuff that comes before the shooting doesn't feel like it warrants a mention, but it's important to note that for the first 20 minutes or so this is your typical stupid, light and fluffy Glee episode with no hint of what's to come next.
Brittany tells the rest of the glee club her theory that an asteroid called 'Tubbington-Bop' is about to hit the Earth, inspiring Mr Schuester to get the group singing their feelings to each other as if it's their final moments alive. Soon after Brittany discovers the 'asteroid' is a dead lady bug on her Pringle can telescope and that's He spots a sweet blonde he believes to be Katie and drags her off to the choir room to serenade her with Elton John's 'Your Song'. It's only at the end of the performance that he discovers he's been 'catfished' and that someone's used the girl's identity to chat Ryder up, a revelation that leaves him heartbroken and humiliated.
He's got company though, as Coach Beiste has her romantic advances rejected by Mr Schuester after organising a Lady and the Tramp -esque romantic dinner for him in the school locker room. Schue invites her to the choir room to make amends via the means of song, but when he claps his hands to start the performance a gunshot goes off.
Then they hear a girl scream and a second gunshot. Immediately the terrified glee club rush for cover, turn out the lights, close the blinds and barricade the doors as outside screaming students run for their lives.
Before we get to the ethics of the shooting plot, we do have to appreciate just how astonishingly well acted and frighteningly authentic the pertinent scenes are. It's an absolutely terrifying segment. He was very nice about the whole thing, but it was clearly uncomfortable for everyone.
Schuester even said he would rap, which he presented like a treat as opposed to a threat. Shortly into practice, they all hear two gunshots from somewhere outside the room and are instantly upset. Will follows the procedures and turns out the lights while all the kids save for Brittany, in the bathroom, and Tina, who was outside hide. The following five minutes of television were easily the most intense Glee has ever been as the students crouch down on the floor and begin to cry. Ryder attempts to call Marissa, but the phone rings in the room — meaning his mystery girl is a member of the Glee club.
The kids are later able to safely evacuate the school, but the question remained the next day: Who was responsible? The gun was hers; she has it at school due to recent events; she felt she would be better able to protect students with a gun. She explained the gun accidentally fired when she took it out to perform a safety check, and then when she dropped it, it shot again — accounting for the two shots.
While talking with Sue about how nervous she was for the future, Becky shows her the loaded gun, which Sue instantly tried to get away from her. Unfortunately, Becky panics, a shot is fired, and then she drops the gun, where it fires again. Back in the present, Sue told Will there is nothing he can do, but to please keep an eye on Becky for her. Sam tells her that she could sing his favorite song to him but Brittany says that she stopped singing to him since he joined the "KKKK" Ku-Klux Klan for Kats , so Sam suggests that the New Directions could serenade him.
Ryder tells Jake about his text relationship with Katie and that he actually saw her in the hallway during class. Jake tells him to take it slow and come up with a plan to personally introduce himself to her. Later, when Ryder meets her again, he introduces himself to a confused Katie and tells her to come with him to the choir room, where he sings Your Song to her. Apparently 'Katie' sent Ryder Marissa's picture and this has happened to her before. Ryder then confronts Jake and Marley , accusing them of catfishing and humiliating him.
Becky tells Brittany that she loves her, with Brittany replying that she loves her too. Shannon invites Will to the locker room where they have a "Lady and the Tramp" themed dinner.
After telling him that she boiled the pasta in the hot-tub in the training room, Shannon confesses her love for Will and tells him that she wants him to be the man in her life. It is revealed Emma and Will have been back together for about a week now, confirming all went well after Girls and Boys on Film.
Hurt and on the verge of tears, Shannon runs off, leaving Will sad. While still being angry at her, Ryder agrees to meet her at 3. Will invites Shannon to the choir room for their first lesson of the week when they hear two gunshots.
Shocked, Will tells the kids to hide while he and Shannon lock the doors and shut the lights. Millie in the kitchen during the gunshot. Both Marley and Unique hold her, forgiving her for what she did. Sam tries to go get Brittany again but is again held back by Will, Shannon, and Artie.
