Regards the gravel, doesnt really matter how you do it so long as the rootball isn't actually sitting in water. The gravel should extend belong the line of the foliage. Regards watering, really it's best to water a plant from the base, not the top, if at all possible.
And use rainwater as far as possible too. It's a good idea with all containerised plants to scrape off the top inch or two and replace it with fresh compost each year.
The bare roots are probably not a problem, but it might help to cover them with a little compost, but you should never heap soil up around the stem of a tree, as this will cause decay to set in.
Noticed to day new blossom is coming through and new leaves growing - we prunned him a tad to day as he was going a bit tall for the room. How do I say thanks? I would be flooding that tree until the water runs through it. Then, come back and do it, again. The soil is now probably so dried out it is hydrophobic, so you're going to have to really soak it well a few times to get it to absorb any water.
And agree with Barb, bigger pot, better potting medium. I use a modified version: 3 parts MiracleGro Vegetable Soil has to be this one , 1 part small bark chips I like either coarse Orchid mix, or reptile bark from Petsmart and 1 part perlite. You can get the MiracleGro and Perlite at Lowe's or Home Depot, as well as the coarse orchid mix or go to Petsmart and get a big back of reptile bark.
I also will use Dyna Gro Foliage Pro full strength once a month. Barb has given you excellent advice. See if you can get your little tree revived and a nicely developed canopy. Once you have that, it will be able to support fruit production, but not until. The actual fear of over watering a container citrus tree, thinking that by doing so could be the tree's demise has itself caused an untold number of problems.
Over watering has never killed a citrus tree. What actually kills the tree is a lack of oxygen at the tree's roots - which is caused by growing the tree in a poor draining medium.
When a citrus tree is planted in a highly areable medium, with good dranage it is VERY hard to over water. The blame rightly belongs on a poorly constructed medium and not the water. I have damaged multiple citrus from too little water; irrigation failure, heat waves and fear of overwatering.
In only one case was there root rot - - - and that was due to a soaker line placement error too close to the trunk. Recovery can be quick if it was a short duration - or a year. Vinyl and don't know who manufactured it. I hate it though. The pickets pull right up and out of the frame and it is flimsy plastic looking and feeling. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking vinyl is "maintenance free" because I spent an hour every day for weeks this summer scrubbing off mildew with chlorox wipes - one picket at a time.
The top post covers have fallen off with snow shoveling and kids playing ball across the street. I need to keep it because of my dogs but one day I will get rid of it. It was the worse use of money I ever had.
Wow, that was negative! But true. Before and After amateur on tiny budget Q. Measure the running length of your shelves and then divide the total by three. So you would measure five running feet of books and place them on five feet of shelf space, then measure out five feet of stuff and place that on shelves. That should leave your with five feet of space. Basically what I am saying is leave one third of your space empty what ever that number should be.
It is challenging to have everything on a table and having to select what looks good and what is readable. I think you need something big over the sofa, maybe an unframed nature scene and target, home depot, lowes, and wal mart have really fun pieces at great prices.
Find some floor lamps a pair for either side of the chairs. I would do a black iron look at that would pull something from your cocktail table and the items would relate to each other and look balanced in the room. Lastly what ever your art work has in dominant bright color I would spray paint lamps the same color and place on either end of sofa on matching end tables.
White would look nice, be a softer country look, and relate to fireplace. I adore your 'twigs' on the fireplace and think they are unique and fun. Keep them there and try the clock on the wall behind the chairs. A pair of aqua pillows like the wall color would look great on the white chairs; small kidney shaped rectangular ones in down fill for 'cush'.
I see you have pillows on the chairs just not sure of color. And I think one black and white zebra or check pillow would look great in the room for some more structure and to match the very cool cocktail table. Your pillows look a little tired. Mark Hampton said, You do not have to use every design idea in only one room. You have a whole house to spread out in. Great advice.
